ABOUT THIS POSITION

Over 48 million passengers traveled through Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport in 2023, one of the busiest airports in the country in the nation's 5th largest city. Sky Harbor is the largest of three airports in the Phoenix Airport System (Phoenix Sky Harbor, Deer Valley, and Goodyear airports) which is operated by the City of Phoenix Aviation Department and has an economic impact over $44 billion annually.

The Aviation Department is seeking a Courier. This is a full-time position that will be responsible for daily mail pickups and drop-offs throughout various routes within Sky Harbor International Airport facilities, Deer Valley Airport, Goodyear Airport, and downtown City offices. This position operates an automobile, high cube truck, or delivery van with a lift gate to transport materials, supplies, and equipment to designated facilities on a daily assigned route. Duties include making deliveries to specific departments, offices, or persons; picking up items from locations for immediate, next day, or future delivery; and organizing, sorting, and packing materials. Daily tasks and delivery routes are assigned by a supervisor.

IDEAL CANDIDATE

  • Knowledge of geography of the community.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of safe motor vehicle operation and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of traffic laws, ordinances, and rules involved in motor vehicle operation.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with other employees.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions in the English language.
  • Ability to learn job-related material primarily through oral instruction and observation mainly in an on-the-job training setting.
SALARY

Pay Range: $15.62 to $23.06 per hour.

Hiring Range: $15,62 to $21.97 per hour.

Internal Only: Please understand that this is pay grade 225. If selected, your salary offer will be based on the applicable promotion or demotion worksheet in accordance with the City Pay Ordinance.
  • Promotions occur when the last two digits of the pay grade increase.
  • Demotions occur when the last two digits of the pay grade decrease.
  • Lateral transfers occur when there is no change to the last two digits of the pay grade.
  • When there is a change in the first digit of the pay grade, there may also be a change to your classification or unit.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Six months experience operating motor vehicles heavier than ordinary passenger vehicles.
  • Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
  • Working conditions:
    • Bending or stooping repeatedly or continually over time may be required.
    • This position requires using a hand truck to move bins and boxes of materials for distances of more than 20 feet.
    • This position requires working outside in a variety of environmental extremes such as heat, cold, rain, air pollution, and dust.
    • Move, lift, and stack heavy objects weighing more than 50 pounds for distances of more than 20 feet may be required.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The minimum qualifications listed above, plus:
  • Six months experience providing customer service in a high traffic and fast paced setting.
  • Experience driving within city limits, knowledge of ADOT regulations and safety standards.
  • Experience performing basic routine check of a vehicle (tires, fluid leaks, warning signs).
  • Experience with maintaining a strict schedule and associated organizational/documentation abilities.
