Department Manager (Vibration and Shock Testing)

Description:

The Department Manager – Vibration & Shock Testing is responsible for leading all operational, technical, and commercial aspects of a dynamic testing laboratory. This role oversees vibration, mechanical shock, and environmental simulation testing to ensure compliance with customer specifications and industry standards. The manager drives operational excellence, ensures technical integrity, and develops a high-performing team.

Key Responsibilities

Operational Leadership

  • Manage daily lab operations including scheduling, resource allocation, and test execution
  • Ensure on-time delivery of testing projects while maintaining quality and safety standards
  • Optimize lab utilization, throughput, and efficiency
  • Oversee preventive maintenance and calibration of vibration systems and associated equipment

Technical Oversight

  • Provide subject matter expertise in vibration, shock, and dynamic testing methodologies
  • Ensure compliance with standards such as MIL-STD-810RTCA DO-160, and IEC 60068
  • Review and approve test plans, procedures, and reports
  • Support root cause analysis and failure investigations

Quality & Compliance

  • Ensure adherence to quality systems such as ISO/IEC 17025
  • Lead audits (internal and external) and maintain accreditation readiness
  • Enforce strict safety protocols for high-force and high-frequency testing environments

Team Leadership & Development

  • Lead, mentor, and develop engineers and technicians
  • Drive training programs for new testing methods and equipment
  • Conduct performance reviews and workforce planning

Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or related field
  • Master's degree preferred

Experience

  • 8–12+ years in vibration, shock, or environmental testing
  • 3–5+ years in leadership or supervisory roles
  • Experience in aerospace, automotive, defense, or TIC industry preferred

Technical Skills

  • Deep knowledge of:
  • Electrodynamic and servo-hydraulic shaker systems
  • Shock machines (drop tables, pyroshock simulators)
  • Data acquisition systems and signal processing
  • Familiarity with control software (e.g., LMS, m+p, Data Physics)
  • Understanding of fatigue, resonance, and modal analysis
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings and test specifications

Work Environment

  • Laboratory setting with exposure to high noise levels and heavy equipment
  • May require occasional travel to customer sites or industry events
