ABOUT THIS POSITION

The Parks and Recreation Department provides residents and visitors more than 41,000 acres of desert parks and mountain preserves. The parks feature 41 trailheads and more than 200 miles of trails, and 185 city parks. Additionally, there are 32 community and recreation centers, classes, and sports programs for all ages, 29 pools, eight golf courses, and a variety of specialty and cultural venues and facilities.

The primary role of this position will perform skilled tasks in the repair and maintenance of plumbing and mechanical equipment in multiple Park facilities throughout the City. Responsibilities include performing large and/or complex plumbing jobs which require the installation of new potable water lines, hot water heaters, hot water boilers, water mains, drinking water purification systems, back flow preventers, sewer lines, swimming pool equipment, chemical injection systems, irrigation systems, and plumbing fixtures. Tasks will require knowledge to determine appropriate work methods, tools, and materials used for most assignments. This position will operate power-driven equipment such as a backhoe, trencher, or other similarly sized equipment and work with cleaning fluids, chemicals, paints, cleaning agents or similar solutions using only normal protective equipment. Scope of work will be performed independently or in teams and could occasionally serve as a crew leader over other staff for specified projects.

This employee will demonstrate continuous efforts to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service. Work assignments are received in the form of verbal and/or written orders which are at times accompanied by sketches and diagrams. Employees act on their own initiative to eliminate defects when mechanical deficiencies are discovered. May be required to be included in a 24-hour emergency Standby on call rotation.

SALARY

Pay Range: $26.18 - $40.61 per hour.

Hiring Range: $26.18 - $31.82 per hour.

Internal Only: Please understand that this is pay grade 149. If selected, your salary offer will be based on the applicable promotion or demotion worksheet in accordance with the City Pay Ordinance.
  • Promotions occur when the last two digits of the pay grade increase.
  • Demotions occur when the last two digits of the pay grade decrease.
  • Lateral transfers occur when there is no change to the last two digits of the pay grade.
  • When there is a change in the first digit of the pay grade, there may also be a change to your classification or unit.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • One year of skilled level experience with computerized irrigation systems and plumbing or mechanical maintenance and repair work.
  • Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
  • All finalists for positions are subject to a criminal background check applicable to the department or position.
  • This position requires the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The minimum qualifications listed above, plus:
  • Experience in facility plumbing.
  • Experience in copper and PVC pipe installation.
  • Experience in irrigation valve repair/replacement.
  • Experience in drinking fountain repair.
  • Experience in splash pad repair.
