Summary The Plant Controller is responsible for overseeing financial operations via cost controls of all manufacturing, material and labor expenses at the plant level including budgeting, forecasting, and reporting. Collaborating with Plant Management to analyze and optimize manufacturing processes, identify cost-reduction opportunities, and enhance overall profitability.
This position is accountable for the overall integrity, accuracy and completeness of financial results and safeguarding of plant assets for a multi-line manufacturing and warehousing facility that has significant operational complexity.
The Plant Controller is a key member of the Plant Management team and engages in all aspects of operations to provide timely and comprehensive financial leadership and support to the Plant Management team.
Requires essential knowledge about key costing, accounting, budgeting and management accounting principles. Other key knowledge areas include quality control, research and development and depreciation on assets.
The ideal candidate will have proven experience assessing and ensuring that the overall manufacturing processes meet the needs and intentions of the organization and ensure budgetary controls in which actual costs incurred by an organization are compared with allocated resources and that the overall project plan, including cost and time estimates, is revised based on the difference between actual costs and allocated resources by applying the experience of broad cost accounting in a manufacturing plant environment.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities: - Accurate and timely financial reporting
- Forecasting & budget planning
- Capital expenditure analysis and reporting
- Accurate cost analysis
- Compliance with internal controls and corporate policies
- Statutory reporting as required
- Support continuous operational and financial results improvement with focus on maximizing financial performance and cost savings
- Work with Plant Management to set annual standards and production yields for financial reporting and costing analysis
- Provide financial guidance and support to Plant Management with proactive communication of accounting/reporting issues and recommendations
- Provide guidance/input to Management on key business decisions that enable effective and efficient operations and delivery of cost savings
- Provide guidance to Plant Management in the origination of capital expenditure requests
- Prepare/review financial support for the capex requests ensuring compliance to policy and robust accurate projections of costs and savings generated by the project. Perform post capital expenditure audits and reviews
- Ensure compliance with key control procedures and corporate policies and procedures at the local level Plant Management team to ensure the overall financial integrity of the plant financial information and safeguarding of assets
- Work with Plant Management to manage effective inventory and operating expenses
- Maintain open communication with the Corporate Finance team to ensure a consistent approach in the financial management of the local operational unit
- Provide support for applicable audits at the operating facility
- Complete other ad-hoc reporting requests
- Manage the weekly/monthly/quarterly flash forecast process with the Plant Management team to deliver accurate forecasted results
- Appropriate identification of risks and opportunities
- Lead the development of the annual operating plan for plant
- Collaborate with the Plant Management Team to identify and recommend process improvements that will deliver financial benefits or mitigate financial risks
- Analyze financial data to facilitate decision making process at the Plant Management level
Education and Experience: - B.S. / B.A. degree in Accounting
- Manufacturing accounting, controlling and cost accounting experience
- 5-7 years related work experience in manufacturing or industrial environment
- Prior Senior Cost Accounting/Plant Cost Accounting experience strongly desired
- ERP System experience
- Strong working knowledge of warehouse and manufacturing cost accounting, controls and compliance procedures and industry practices
- Strong IT system experience (Microsoft Office)
- Prior in-pant manufacturing industry experience required.

CORE SKILLS and COMPETENCIES Budgeting & Forecasting: Proven ability to coordinate and prepare annual budgets and periodic financial forecasts for the plant
The controller should align budgets with corporate strategy and operational goals, and provide updated projections as business conditions change.
Cost Accounting & Cost Control: Expertise in cost accounting is critical - including maintaining standard costs, analyzing labor/material/overhead variances, and monitoring cost of goods sold
The Plant Controller uses variance analysis and cost analytics to identify inefficiencies or overruns and drive cost control initiatives that improve profitability
Inventory Control: Strong experience in inventory management and valuation is required. This includes overseeing cycle counts and physical inventories, ensuring accurate inventory records, and reconciling inventory balances to the general ledger
Knowledge of inventory accounting methods (FIFO/LIFO) and minimizing write-offs or shrink is important for maintaining accurate financial statements.
Financial Reporting & Analysis:
Ability to close the books for the plant and prepare detailed financial reports (monthly, quarterly, annual). This includes generating income statements, balance sheets, and cash flow reports for the facility, and explaining performance against budget or prior year
The controller must be adept at analyzing financial results, highlighting key variances in production costs or margins, and presenting insights and recommendations to management
Maintain a robust system of internal controls (e.g. proper expense approvals, segregation of duties, asset protection) and ensure compliance with any relevant regulations such as the Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) Act for financial reporting integrity
Technical Proficiency ERP & Systems Skills: Proficiency with enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems and accounting software is expected. The Plant Controller should be capable of leveraging ERP modules for accounting, production, and inventory to streamline reporting (e.g. SAP, Oracle, or industry-specific systems)
Experience in ERP systems in a manufacturing plant environment is a strong asset
Advanced Excel & Analytics: Strong computer skills, particularly in Microsoft Excel for financial modeling, data analysis, and reporting, are required

- Work space is one that contains moving mechanical parts.
- Requires work in an indoor manufacturing environment that may be exposed to extreme heat that is not air conditioned.
- Work environment contains loud noises and odors that may last for long periods of time or on a continual basis as well as occasional airborne particles.
- Must wear PPE while entering or working in plant areas, which includes hairnet, hearing protection and safety glasses with side guards at all times
