Job Description

Candidates interested in a career with a focus on financial and project management are invited to apply to join the team at ASU's School of Sustainable Engineering and the Built Environment (SSEBE) within the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering (FSE).

Members of the Research Advancement Team are responsible for providing financial oversight of grants and contracts while working closely with faculty who are making impactful advances in solving today's global issues. Responsibilities center on compliance, budgeting, reporting, and financial stewardship. Individuals who understand the principles of financial practices, possess excellent customer service skills, and value continuous improvement are desired. In addition to providing financial support to faculty, this position will supervise the post-award team that are responsible for managing sponsored research projects and faculty discretionary accounts.

This is a mid-career track position (Level 3 of 6) reporting to the SSEBE Assistant Director Research Advancement with opportunities to increase complexity based on job performance, as well as growth into multiple branches of specialization or supervisory tracks.

Essential Duties

Financial Account Management

  • Manages a complex portfolio of accounts; analyzes and prepares reports
  • Monitors expenditures and various financial processes related to sponsored projects
  • Forecasting accounts to avoid deficits and provide information to end users for decision making
  • Approves financial and payroll transactions ensuring the expenses are allowable
  • Provides guidance and assistance in preparing administrative post award documents
  • Responsible for preparing budgets in the ASU financial system

Leadership

  • Leads the budgeting and forecasting process for the school
  • Leads new administrative initiatives impacting research administration and compliance
  • Monitor faculty finances for the school, including developing and examining financial reports
  • Works under deadlines, manages multiple responsibilities and duties, while navigating interruptions and unclear and/or changing situations
  • Supervise and mentor the post award research advancement staff

Personnel Management

  • Personnel management, coaching, and development of assigned employees; mentor team members across FSE
  • Fosters a positive team climate by working collaboratively
  • Assists leadership in setting clear team goals
  • Develops and facilitates onboarding and training for new and existing team members

Communication

  • Responds to requests timely using effective interpersonal communication, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills and methods
  • Interfaces with faculty and across departments for efficient and effective coordination and communication
  • Strong written and verbal communication - to liaise with PIs, department staff, central offices, and sponsors
  • Ability to explain financial concepts to non-financial stakeholders (faculty, researchers)

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience in preparing and producing complex/detailed documents, financial reports, spending projections, and related materials for a high volume of awards
  • Experienced problem solver who takes initiative, manages a complex workload effectively and set priorities while being flexible.
  • Experience working independently as well as a member of a team
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the policies, procedures and requirements of all applicable regulations governing management of complex grants and/or contracts for sponsors such as USDOT, AzDOT, NSF, DOE, ONR, AFOSR, AFRL, and ARO
  • Experience in post award sponsored projects management functions and practices within a university environment
  • Evidence of effective verbal and written communication skills and a high level of customer service
  • Demonstrated experience in the ability to motivate and manage a team

  • Activities are primarily performed in a regular, climate-controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting
