Definition

Definition: Under general supervision of Cultural Resources Department, Tribal Historic Preservation Office, conducts a variety of field work and administrative tasks to establish and maintain the Community Garden program for the Salt River Pima Maricopa Indian Community (SRPMIC). This job class is treated as FLSA Exempt.

Examples of Tasks

1.Supervise, coaches, and counsels assigned community garden staff, interns and volunteers.

  • Plan, prioritize, schedule and coordinate workflow; establish work priorities, assignments, goals and expectations or performance.
  • Counsel employees and assist with hiring and performance evaluations.
  • Ensures quality and accurate work is completed, following department guidelines, HR Policies, and tribal ordinances.
  • Develop work schedules for community garden staff to ensure assignments are completed timely and employees are appropriately tasked within their respective skillsets.
  • Assists with monitoring and recording time and attendance of garden staff.
2.Mentors the garden staff to attain, improve and refresh technical and professional skills along with cultural knowledge of traditional gardening and horticulture.
  • Directs, instructs and provides training opportunities to the community garden staff, interns and volunteers in fundamentals of traditional and contemporary horticulture.
  • Contribute to a working environment that motivates, coaches and mentors the community garden staff to excel.
  • Assists with developing and prioritizing the division's vision, goals and objectives.

3.Oversees planning and developing a demonstration/community garden up to 5 acres to exhibit and teach sustainable traditional and contemporary agricultural practices.
  • Serves as a liaison with involved participants, including SRPMIC staff, Community members and other groups utilizing the garden.
  • Designs and recommend layouts, bedding sizes and assignment of plots of land to users.
  • Acquires and implements necessary equipment, irrigation systems, operation supplies.
  • Determines planting, treatment and harvesting schedules.

4.Oversee seed bank to ensure the continued survival and availability of native and heritage seeds for the Community.
  • Ensures accurate records management of seed bank content.
  • Ensures seed bank equipment and materials are maintained and secure.
  • Manages seed distribution efforts to Community members.
5.Organizes education and outreach activities for the community garden and staff.
  • Develops a variety of educational classes, tours, presentations and materials designed to encourage Community members gardening.
  • Networks and collaborates with other related Community groups departments on mutually beneficial projects.
  • Plans and develop promotional campaigns designed to elevate awareness and support of native/traditional food production and consumption.
  • Provides support for Community members, departments and groups seeking gardening advice and assistance.

6.Administration & Operations: Assists with reporting and budgeting requirements of the community garden.
  • Write and present reports to the Program Manager or Department Director, as required.
  • Attend Community district and Council meetings and department meetings to report on project/program status, as needed.
  • Compiles applicable statistics and other information relating to the community garden.
  • Maintains the supplies inventory and records associated with assignments such as status of equipment and supplies.
  • Assists Program Manager and Department Director with budget projections, monitoring expenditures and reporting.

7. Miscellaneous: Performs other job-related tasks as assigned by the Tribal Historic Preservation Officer or Department Director.
Knowledge, Abilities, Skills and Other Characteristics:
  • Knowledge of the history, culture, laws, rules, customs and traditions of the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community.
  • Knowledge of plant culture, anatomy, stress and detection of diseases.
  • Knowledge of the principles of organic gardening and sustainable agriculture.
  • Skill with program development, coordination, evaluation, modification and problem solving.
  • Skill listening well, communicating with, and instructing, others having varying educational backgrounds and values using both technical and non-technical language as appropriate in order to provide service and explanations to those for whom the subject matter is unfamiliar.
  • Skill in organizing and prioritizing work.
  • Ability to prepare project status reports.
  • Ability to lift and carry 50 Ibs.
  • Ability to use initiative and independent judgment while recognizing when it is appropriate to refer matters to the supervisor's attention.

Minimum Qualifications

Education & Experience: A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Agriculture, Agronomy, Horticulture, Soil, Chemistry or Resource Management, or closely related discipline, AND
  • 2 years of full-time experience, similar to the duties of the Community Garden Supervisor required.
  • 1 year of supervisory experience.

Equivalency: Any equivalent combination of experience and education that will allow the applicant to satisfactorily perform the duties of the job may be considered when filling the position.

Underfill Eligibility: An enrolled Community Member whom closely qualifies for the minimum qualifications for a position may be considered for employment under SRPMIC Policy 2-19, Underfill
Special Requirements
  • May be required to work beyond normal work hours including nights, weekends and holidays.
  • May be required to work in extreme temperatures including heat, cold, rain, etc.
Prior to hire as an employee, applicants will be subject to drug and alcohol testing. Will be required to pass a pre-employment background/fingerprint check.
